WELCOME TO THE HUDDERSFIELD CARNIVAL 2013

Huddersfield Carnival is one of the largest outdoor festivals in West Yorkshire for the whole family to enjoy. On behalf of Huddersfield African Caribbean Cultural Trust, I would like to thank all of our sponsors who continue help to make the event such a big success.

Huddersfield Carnival is in its 30th year, having grown from one float in the Mayor’s parade to become the largest festival in the Kirklees calendar and attracting an audience in the region of 30,000.

Drawing inspiration from the Caribbean, the Carnival provides a medium through which local communities can develop and display their talents in costume design, music, dance and drama.

The Carnival is celebrated over two days; last year from the 12 July - 13 July 2013, with the Carnival Royale Show, where contestants compete for the Crown and the opportunity to lead the Carnival Procession.

A new addition to Carnival is the J’ouvert, now in its fifh year.

The J’ouvert is steeped in tradition and playing ‘Mud Mas’ involves participants known as Jab Jabs covering themselves, and others, in paint, chocolate mud or white powder. This will start at midnight, with music being the dominating sounds, with revellers parading through the town.

On Saturday, 13th July the Mas Band Parade will take place, commencing from the Hudawi Centre at 1pm and winding its way through the streets of Huddersfield. Where Bands will display an array of flamboyant costumes and paraded around Greenhead Park where, each band will be given the opportunity to take to the stage.

A variety of stalls will be available for purchase of both food and none food, including the popular Jerk Chicken. Also featured will be an inflatable ride along with a young people’s zone with live entertainment and activities.
